PDI - Club Competition Rules

The following competition rules were revised in August 2024:

  1. The committee may amend the rules governing competitions and awards, taking into account developments in photography and the current state of the Society. Changes must be communicated to the members as soon as possible before the start of a competition season and will remain in effect for the entire season.

  2. To maintain anonymity, PDIs (Projected Digital Images) must bear the entrant's competition number and a title for the convenience of the Competition Secretaries; names must not be put onto the entries.
Judges will only be given the titles of the images submitted.

The current maximum number of images per competition is:

    4No. Projected Digital Images

Each digital image's JPEG file name must contain and be separated by dashes:

    • Image Title

    • Competition number of the author

    • Order of preference: either “A” “B” “C” or “D”.

      Eg. "The World is Ablase - 64 - A.jpg"

  3. In the event of a high number of entries, the “D” section will be withdrawn.

  4. Competition entry hand-in dates are set by the Syllabus and Competition Secretaries.
These dates MUST be adhered to.
Entries not received by the given date will not be entered into that competition.

  5. All entries will be submitted to the Judge or Judges appointed by the Competition Secretaries at least 2 weeks before the competition date.

  6. Prohibitions:

    a) The use of Ai in computer software to “generate an image” is prohibited; however, the use of Ai such as in “Content Aware fill/delete” within programs such as Photoshop or Lightroom, is permitted.
In the event of any doubt, the author will be asked to supply a copy of the original image, complete with Metadata.

    b) All images must be the work of the author; importing content into an image which is not the work of the author is prohibited (e.g. adding a sky or an object, such as a figure from an external source).

  7. Resubmission of images:
No work may be submitted to more than 1 monthly or 1 annual competition; however, your preferred work that has been entered into the monthly competitions can be used in the annual competition of that season. Work entered into any medium (e.g. as a PDI) can not be entered into any other format (e.g. A PRINT). Work entered into a Set Subject competition MUST NOT have been entered into any other previous competition. Hence, work can only be submitted in one season and one format.

  8. Image specifications for in-house competitions:

    Dimensional Size - Maximum

              1600 pixels for HorizontalLandscape format
              1200 pixels for VerticalPortrait format

Note that an image in landscape format must also respect the vertical size limit.

    File format: JPG, JPEG

    Colour Space:  sRGB

    Print resolution:  72 DPI

Borders (optional): A 4-pixel, white border can be applied to the image to help separate it from the standard black background. This must be included in the overall pixel limit sizes.

  9. Image specifications for external competitions:

Images for external competitions may have different requirements; you will be informed if this is the case.

These amendments were agreed by the Committee on the 12th August 2024.
