Born and lived in Sunderland , until moving to South Shields in 1945 when he married Dorothy.

After leaving school, he served as an apprentice at Reyrolles, followed by National Service in the army, then as a Chartered Electrical Engineer for the North Eastern Electricity Board until taking early retirement in 1981. A keen photographer since his teenage years, with a great love of nature and the countryside, especially the Lake District and Weardale. Along with Dorothy enjoyed walking and bird watching. George loved poetry and art, in particular the Pre-Raphaelite paintings.

He had a great interest in prehistoric sites and old buildings, which also feature in his photographs. George was a past member and past Chairman of Harton Probus, giving several illustrated talks to this and to other societies. George joined the Photographic Society in 1987 also served on the committee of the Photographic Society and had a spell as editor of the societies journal.
