Brian joined the South Shields Photographic Society in October 1956 having been proposed by Jim Carmichael and Ron Brown who were, already established members with several years, membership between them. He was an active member from the onset, progressing through the Preliminary and Intermediate Sections of both Lantern Slides (Monochrome Slides that were the forerunner of the colour slides of today) and Pictorial Monochrome Prints to become an advanced worker in both sections.

Throughout his photographic career he covered a variety of subject matter in his repertoire, and had a great liking for “Photo- Journalism” but, we shall all remember him for his “Record Photography” which consisted mainly of Cathedral interiors that he is well noted for, the 20x16 prints that he produced were instantly recognisable in any competition or exhibition.

The five attached photographs are from scanned 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” Lantern Slides and are good examples of his style of work, the three shots of Wells Cathedral and the plaque in Durham Cathedral would have all been shot on a “ Linhof Technika 5x4 camera using his favourite film HP5 processed to his own specifications. He did use smaller format cameras of both 35mm and 6x6 medium format and was particularly fond of using a “Plaubel Makina” camera that gave him 6x7 on a 120 roll film.

By the early sixties he was already serving on the committee of the society being secretary of the “International Salon of Photography” from 1962 to 1979 and included the office of President in 1972 to 1974 whilst still looking after the Salon. Like so many members of the society at that time he offered his services to “Northern Counties Photographic Federation” where he served as Treasurer and Editor of the “Northern Focus Magazine” and finally becoming President of the Federation 1988 to 1990.

Amongst his many other photographic talents he was also an accredited judge and lecturer throughout Northern England where he travelled to many clubs giving his time for the benefit of others and was always willing to offer help and assistance, he is with out doubt acknowledged to have been one of the finest Ambassadors that South Shields Photographic Society has ever had.
